Chicago Bears: Grading every pick in 2020 NFL Draft
Round 2, Pick 50: Jaylon Johnson, CB
Many people, including me, were sure that the Chicago Bears would trade this pick. Chicago had a number of needs and with the number of quality prospects in this class, a lot of those needs could be filled in the middle rounds. There were a lot of Pro Bowl-caliber players to be had in the third and fourth rounds, but the Bears owned no picks in either of them.
The Bears decided to stay put and keep the pick. With that pick, they selected Utah cornerback Jaylon Johnson.
Johnson measures in at 6-0 and weighs 193 pounds. He has the desired body type to succeed in the NFL. He also has good speed (4.5-second 40-yard dash) to keep up with any receiver.
Johnson is a bully, playing a physical game. He plays well in press coverage and stays close to the receiver, affecting the route. Additionally, he has good instincts and does a good job of getting to the ball. He stays in close contact with receivers. As a result, opposing receivers will contend with a number of contested catch attempts when they face him. He’ll be a good ball hawk in the pros. In his three college seasons, he recorded 7 interceptions and had 21 passes defended.
Johnson will have success in the NFL. He is a CB1 player and some scouts projected him as a first-round pick.
Teaming Johnson with Kyle Fuller gives them a very tough combination. Opposing quarterbacks will have a tough time completing passes, and quite a few of those passes will get picked. This pick makes an already elite Chicago Bears defense even better.
Grade: A — Even though the Bears have quite a few cornerbacks already on the roster, Johnson will be an elite player and will have a few Pro Bowls in his future.
