New England Patriots

Sometimes watching the New England Patriots in the draft can be so confusing. They have six Super Bowl wins, so they’re doing something right but this year it felt as though Bill Belichick was going out of his way to be contrarian to what everyone expected them to do.

In need of a quarterback after seeing Tom Brady leave, the Patriots not only didn’t draft a signal-caller at all, but they doubled up at two other positions even with some decent arm talent on the board. After taking safety Kyle Dugger from Lenoir-Rhyne at 37, they took back-to-back edge rushers in Josh Uche (60) and Anfernee Jennings (87).

Tight ends were next as they took UCLA’s Devin Asiasi at No 91 and Virginia Tech’s Dalton Keene at 101. Just to really confuse us, they followed those up with a kicker from Marshall named Justin Rohrwasser.

Clearly, there’s something else up the sleeve of Belichick and the Patriots because they can’t be sold on Brian Hoyer and Jarrett Stidham as their two quarterbacks. Sure, Stidham has some solid traits but he has to have shown a lot in practice for them to be so sold on their current situation.

Again, Belichick knows what he’s doing but it feels like these weird drafts where he continually does the unexpected and avoids certain needs will eventually catch up to him.
