Carolina Panthers

It was the first draft for Matt Rhule as the head coach of the Carolina Panthers and it’s hard to see how he could have made out much better than he did. At No. 7 overall, the Panthers added Auburn defensive tackle Derrick Brown who feels like a player who can’t miss. He might not be the flashiest name but he gets the job done and will free things up for those around him on defense.

From there, they continued to add great value as Yetur Gross-Matos was there for the taking at No. 38 overall. They also traded the 69th and 148th pick to the Seattle Seahawks for pick No. 64 where they took Southern Illinois safety Jeremy Chinn. It was a small price to pay to ensure they landed the small-school kid with massive potential.

The solid picks didn’t end there either as Troy Pride and Kenny Robinson were added in day three and each has a shot to develop into something special. Robinson is especially intriguing considering he came via the XFL route after playing for West Virginia.

If there was any knock, it was the fact that they didn’t draft any offensive players. While they have a lot of talent on that side, not addressing any needs feels like it could become an issue but that’s secondary to the fact that they landed a lot of players who were valued much higher than where they landed.

Grade: B+
