The Chicago Bears decided not to draft a safety to pair up with Eddie Jackson. Here are veteran options still available to target.

The 2020 NFL Draft came and went. The Chicago Bears made their choices on prospects they felt could help the team. What was odd from their choices was the absence of a safety. Even without drafting someone, there were some available prospects who weren’t drafted. General manager Ryan Pace still didn’t pick up a safety.

By skipping over some talented prospects who were available in the draft, the Bears have to go with a veteran option. At this point, Deon Bush is the starter with Eddie Jackson. DeAndre Houston-Carson and Jordan Lucas are likely backups. Bush has been a dependable backup but I’m not sure how good of a starter he’ll be.

It appears that Pace likes the safety position the way it is now. Jackson is back to the position he dominated at free safety, but everyone else there is a question.

In order to have a more solid safety unit, the Bears need to look at some veteran options. There are still quite a few veterans available who could help the Bears. The safety position is one that has been almost as forgotten as the running back position. Big-time players haven’t gotten the contracts they expected and have taken smaller deals or are still unsigned.

Whether or not the NFL comes back in full this fall, these veterans are looking to sign. At this point, the Bears can find an option at a team-friendly deal. There will be many “prove it” deals around the league and the Bears should be involved.

Here are some veteran free agent options the Chicago Bears should target to be the starter in 2021.
