Tashaun Gipson

Tashaun Gipson is a recent addition to the free-agent list. The Houston Texans released Gipson just a couple of days ago. He also was a year into a new deal (three years, $22.5 million). There is speculation that the Texans may go after Reid since his brother is also in Houston.

In his only season with the Texans, Gipson was productive. He recorded 51 tackles, eight passes defended and three interceptions (one run back for a touchdown). Suddenly, however, general manager/head coach Bill O’Brien now wants cheaper help.

Gipson played his first four seasons for the Cleveland Browns, where he had a Pro Bowl season, before moving on to the Jacksonville Jaguars. He is one of the undrafted rookie success stories.

He did miss the final two games of the 2019 season with a back injury. The release could be a sign that something might still be wrong. He’s another player who needs to show he’s over the injury before a team gives him a multi-year deal.

Gipson is a hard-nosed player with a great work ethic. Despite his success, he still plays like that undrafted rookie still trying to make the team. That attitude will help him now that he’s trying to find a new team. He’ll just have to continue to work as hard as he has his entire career. Teams usually look at undrafted free agents differently than highly drafted players. Gipson’s skills and great work ethic would do him well with the Chicago Bears.
