1. Charlie Taumoepeau, TE, Portland State

2020 feels like a bit of a flashback to 2018 for the Dallas Cowboys. That was the first time they said goodbye to Jason Witten, who is arguably the best tight end Dallas has ever had. Following the 2017 season, Witten decided to retire and took a job with ESPN. After a highly criticized season in the booth, he returned to the field last season.

Witten again was the starting tight end for the Cowboys and after the struggles at the position the prior season, he was welcomed with open arms. However, his play had declined and now he heads to Las Vegas to play for Jon Gruden and the Raiders.

Blake Jarwin, who was given a health extension this offseason, will be in line to start for the Boys and free-agent signee Blake Bell and third-year pro Dalton Schultz should be in the mix for snaps and Cole Hikutini rounds things out as far as experienced options go.

With those names not standing out as elite players, someone such as Charlie Taumoepeau, from Portland State could fight his way onto the roster. Taumoepeau played for a small program but his tape shows a player that has a lot of potential to make an NFL roster.

He’s praised for his ability as a receiver but he’s also an above-average blocker, something that’s clearly important for the position.

Taumoepeau might need to put on some weight as he checked into the Scouting Combine at 6-2 and 240 pounds but he also displayed enough speed and athleticism there to show he can be a problem for defenses in the passing game.

His versatility to line up in-line, in the slot, and as an H-back could help him as he aims to make the Cowboys 53-man roster.
