The Miami Dolphins released their rookie numbers for the 2020 season and quarterback Tua Tagovailoa getting No. 1 is the perfect choice.

From the moment that the Miami Dolphins began tearing down their roster, it was said that the organization was “Tanking for Tua”. Of course, under new head coach Brian Flores, the Dolphins won more than anyone expected and ended up with the fifth pick in the 2020 NFL Draft. Yet, they still ended up with their guy, Alabama quarterback Tua Tagovailoa.

If healthy, there’s no question that Tua can be the franchise quarterback in Miami. However, one question about the rookie quarterback was what number he would wear for the Dolphins. Tagovailoa wore No. 13 for the Crimson Tide in college and, frankly, that was never going to happen in South Beach thanks to Dan Marino.

On Tuesday, however, the Dolphins announced their rookie numbers. And it was revealed that Tua Tagovailoa’s number will be No. 1. He even put out a picture of him in his new aqua threads and No. 1 jersey.

In the grand scheme of things, numbers only matter so much — though it does matter more to some fans than others. But for Tua Tagovailoa, given that he wasn’t going to get No. 13 for the Dolphins, getting No. 1 is perfect.

Miami is entering a new era for the franchise. General manager Chris Grier tore the Dolphins roster down to the studs to rebuild it with the players that can get the team out of mediocrity and, hopefully, in position to actually contend. However, that plan is all for naught if they don’t have the right quarterback.

They have believed and continue to believe that Tua Tagovailoa is that player. It’s clear that the Dolphins have gone back to square one, where the rebuild must start. Tua wearing No. 1 is the perfect representation of that. He’s where this plan in Miami begins and ends as the hopes of the franchise rest on his capable shoulders.
