The Packers haven’t really improved on the defensive line this offseason, despite giving up a generous 4.9 yards per carry in 2019 (playoffs included). They signed Treyvon Hester earlier this month, but he figures to be more of a depth piece than anything else.

Nose tackle Damon Harrison remains one of the best available free agents. Harrison has been known for a while as the best run-stuffer in the NFL, which is the biggest reason the Packers should open up the checkbook. Harrison was released by the Detroit Lions earlier this offseason as a cap casualty.

As an undrafted free agent in 2012, Harrison has been the most dominant run defender for the better part of the past decade. The man nicknamed “Snacks” comes in at 350 pounds, which is a huge reason he’s so dominant up front. According to PFF (subscription required), Harrison has posted a run defense grade of over 90.0 (which is considered elite) in five of his eight NFL seasons.

Still just 31 years old, Harrison wouldn’t be the type of signing to tip the scales in the Packers favor as Super Bowl favorites. That said, he’d be a huge addition (no pun intended) for a defense lacking toughness up front.
