NFL Quarterback Power Rankings 2020: Patrick Mahomes is head of the class
By Samuel Teets
After Eli Manning retired following the 2019 season, many fans wondered if Philip Rivers would follow suit. Instead, the 38-year-old decided he wanted one final shot at winning a Super Bowl. Rivers signed a one-year, $25 million deal with the Colts, who still have not recovered from Andrew Luck’s retirement.
Rivers gives Indianapolis a quarterback who can consistently move the football, which is something Jacoby Brissett struggled with during the second half of the 2019 season. Despite throwing 20 interceptions and only 23 touchdowns last season, Rivers did complete 66.0 percent of his pass attempts on his way to throwing for 4,615 yards. In comparison, Brissett’s single-season career-high is 3,098 passing yards.
With a new organization and coaching staff, Rivers could experience a bounce-back season. Of any quarterback ranked this low on the list, Rivers has the greatest chance of jumping into the top 15 quarterbacks by the end of the 2020 season. He’s only a year and a half removed from throwing for 32 touchdowns and 12 interceptions and leading the Chargers to a 12-4 record.
Rivers joins a team that features one of the best pass-blocking lines in football. After enduring years of physical abuse behind a porous line in San Diego and Los Angeles, Rivers can finally feel secure in the pocket. Indianapolis’ offense also features established veterans like T.Y. Hilton and Marlon Mack and promising rookies in Michael Pittman Jr. and Jonathan Taylor.
If Rivers gets the Colts back to the playoffs this coming season, don’t rule out the potential of him signing another one-year deal with Indy.
