2021 NFL Mock Draft: Trevor Lawrence tank pays off for Jaguars, Trey Lance to Raiders
Justyn Ross introduced himself to the world in a big way in the 2018 College Football Playoff. In matchups against Notre Dame and Alabama en route to Clemson winning the National Championship, Trevor Lawrence took advantage of the physically gifted then-true freshman. Ross topped 300 yards on 12 catches and scored three touchdowns to help push the Tigers to the natty.
In his sophomore season after posting 1,000 yards and nine scores as a big-play threat in his first season, Ross’ role changed. Tee Higgins was clearly the favorite target of Lawrence in the passing offense while running back Travis Etienne had to be fed as well. He became less of a big-play threat as he had 20 more receptions on the year but had just 865 yards and eight scores on the year.
No one is going to mistake Ross for a burner in the mold of Henry Ruggs III or a litany of other prospects that win with speed. However, he’s fast enough to create separation and has an elite frame at 6-4, 205 pounds to win at the catch point against anyone. He also has a great feel for the game and nice hands to make plays.
Though the Detroit Lions have plenty of needs, they could be hurting at wide receiver soon as both Kenny Golladay and Marvin Jones Jr. could become free agents after the 2020 season. Even if they re-sign one or both guys, the Lions would be wise to add to that group with a player like Ross who could hopefully help Matthew Stafford be able to lead this team to actual success.
