5 Dallas Cowboys who will improve under new regime
By Randy Gurzi
4. Blake Jarwin, Tight End
The previous regime deserves some credit for discovering tight end Blake Jarwin. Maybe he was signed due to vice president of player personnel Will McClay, but no player made the team that Jason Garrett didn’t want on the roster. For that reason, he deserves some credit for allowing an undrafted free agent with only 41 career catches for Oklahoma State to develop into a contributor for the Dallas Cowboys.
Having said that, Garrett is also responsible for holding Jarwin back once he showed he was ready. In 2018, Jarwin was part of a committee that was trying to replace Jason Witten who had retired and headed to ESPN. He wasn’t ready then but started to show signs of progress late in the year, including a three-touchdown performance in Week 17.
Witten then returned and Jarwin was unable to take over since Garrett had one of his good buddies back. And while Witten looked refreshed early on, he started to show as the season progressed that he wasn’t the player he used to be. And Jarwin continued to show he was a better, more explosive option.
Now with Mike McCarthy in charge and Witten in Las Vegas, Jarwin is ready for more. He was also given a solid extension this offseason which shows how much they think of him. Having a pass-catching tight end with the ability to pick up yards after the catch is going to help this offense a lot and Jarwin is exactly that.
