Adding Ty Montgomery makes New Orleans Saints more dangerous
The New Orleans Saints have been active in free agency this offseason and adding Ty Montgomery could be exactly the spark their offense needs.
The 2020 offseason has been busy for the New Orleans Saints. The team re-signed a handful of players along with striking a few draft deals. In particular, the Saints have been especially active in free agency.
Almost every free-agent player the Saints have acquired this offseason has been an established veteran, adding some experience to a relatively young team. Most recently, the team decided to sign running Ty Montgomery — and it could be their most genius move yet.
At this point, the details of Montgomery’s contract have not been disclosed. Either way, deciding to add him now is a great idea. Some assumed the Saints could be considering shipping Alvin Kamara to another team. While that didn’t come to fruition, signing Montgomery is still a smart move.
Some might shake their head at the Saints signing another running back. The team still has Kamara and Latavius Murray on their roster. Considering Kamara’s injury last season, however, adding a player like Montgomery stands to reason.
Last year, the team relied heavily on Murray with Kamara banged up and, to his credit, he delivered. However, if Murray were to get injured or if the Saints wanted a player to contribute as a receiving option if Kamara got hurt again, Montgomery could step in.
Moreover, Montgomery brings versatility to line up all over the field as he’s played at running back, wide receiver and on special teams. The Saints probably won’t wield him as they do Taysom Hill but he could be another movable weapon.
Adding this type of depth makes the Saints already-dangerous offense even more so. Montgomery joins the team as a well-traveled player and he now joins one of the most talented groups in the league. Not only will Sean Payton surely have plans to move him around and use him but he also offers valuable depth in the backfield that the team needed before the signing.
