4. Miles Austin, Wide Receiver

Another former Cowboy that moved into the coaching ranks is Miles Austin who spent last season with the NFC Champions, the San Francisco 49ers. Under head coach Kyle Shanahan, Austin served as the offensive quality control coach. He and Shanahan know one another from their time together with the Cleveland Browns.

Austin landed in Cleveland in 2014, which was after he spent the first eight years of his career in Dallas. A former undrafted free agent, Austin worked his way to the starting team as he famously took over for Terrell Owens as the No. 1 receiver in 2009 despite having just 18 career receptions.

Dallas took a risk that season and Austin repaid them for their faith by catching 81 passes for 1,320 yards with 11 touchdowns. He followed that up with another 1,000-yard season but then began to slow down and he was released just ahead of the 2014 season.

Clearly there were no hard feelings as Austin was brought to the staff as a scouting intern in 2017. He also interviewed for the wide receiver coach position but was ultimately passed up.

His career seems to be on the sidelines now but at 35 years of age, there’s no reason to think he couldn’t try and make a comeback if he felt compelled to do so.
