4. Managing to land Trevon Diggs and Reggie Robinson

There were plenty of fans who were upset about the Cowboys losing Byron Jones, and rightfully so. Jones turned into a high-end defensive back over the past couple of seasons and took care of his side of the field. He wasn’t perfect but you never had to worry about whether or not he was going to be on the field and doing his job.

That’s why the Miami Dolphins made him the highest-paid cornerback in the NFL once he hit free agency. For Dallas, it came down to them believing they needed to re-sign their offensive talent and plan on using the draft to replace their departing defender.

By all accounts, Dallas was considering cornerback at No. 17 but that changed when CeeDee Lamb was still on the clock. His presence changed things but the Cowboys were taking a risk that their defense was going to suffer. That risk ended up paying off as they not only landed their top player on the board in Round 1, but they still got two players who could be defensive stars for them.

In Round 2, they landed Trevon Diggs who is expected to start right away. He has the desired size and speed for the position and has excellent hands, especially considering he used to play receiver. Two rounds later, Dallas took Reggie Robinson from Tulsa, who has nearly as much potential as Diggs.

Robinson has excellent size and isn’t afraid to get physical. He won’t be ready as quickly as Diggs but he was one of the favorite picks for Dallas, which is saying a lot after the draft they had.
