Green Bay Packers: Kamal Martin, LB

In free agency, the Green Bay Packers tried to bolster their linebacker corps as they signed former Cleveland Browns linebacker Christian Kirksey. One of the more talented players on the Browns roster, Kirksey’s ability has never been in question but his durability has. He missed time in each of the past two seasons, which led to his release this year.

As it stands now, Kirksey is the most experienced (and most talented) interior linebacker in the Packers 3-4 defense as they lost both Blake Martinez and B.J. Goodson (who replaces Kirksey in Cleveland) this offseason.

That leaves the door open for several young players to log significant snaps at the linebacker spot, which could be huge for fifth-round pick Kamal Martin from Minnesota. Martin was one of the leaders on a talented Gopher’s defense but he was labeled “stiff” by some scouts in the pre-draft process and there were also concerns about how his play recognition would translate.

Even with his shortcomings, Martin did nothing but make plays for Minnesota. He finished his four-year career with 177 tackles, 13 for a loss, and 3.5 sacks. He also proved he could generate turnovers, hauling in four picks and forcing four fumbles in his career.

Green Bay has done a lot to overhaul their defense over the past two seasons but Martin still finds himself in a good spot to try and get on the field and continue to prove he can make plays. Don’t be surprised to see him take advantage of that opportunity should it present itself.
