Will Drew Brees comments affect the New Orleans Saints?
Could Drew Brees’ comments change the dynamic of the New Orleans Saints?
Amidst nationwide protests and unrest, New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees recently commented on NFL players kneeling during the national anthem, resulting in criticism from his fellow New Orleans Saints teammates, league peers, fans and other athletes as well.
On Thursday, Brees released an apology, posting it to his social media accounts. However, as several NFL players, including some from his own team, have publically opposed his stance, it’s safe to wonder whether or not that dynamic in the Saints locker and, subsequently, on the field will be affected.
Drew Brees has long been the leader of the Saints as a whole. However, his comments have clearly caused waves within the locker room and with parts of the New Orleans fanbase as well. There were calls of “#DrewBreesIsCancelled” on Twitter, which speaks to the number of people he upset.
Two notable teammates who voiced their distaste with Brees were wide receiver Michael Thomas and newly added safety Malcolm Jenkins. At the same time, after the apology, linebacker Demario Davis spoke up and commended the quarterback for being a good leader with his apology. But how will all of this ripple into the 2020 season?
Drew Brees causing inevitable change with Saints
Frankly, there seems like little chance that there isn’t some kind of change in the Saints locker room dynamic. The divisiveness is clear among his teammates and there is no guarantee that his apology changes that or that the rest of the Saints roster reacts similarly to Davis. That kind of unrest is not going to strengthen the team in any way.
At the same time, this could also lead to a change in leadership in the Saints locker room. The quarterback has been looked upon as the primary figure on the roster for some time now. However, there’s a chance that the rest of the roster could instead rally behind Thomas, Jenkins or another veteran after these comments.
Unknowingly, Brees has changed things for the Saints, likely for good.
