. . Previous: 17th. Atlanta Falcons. 19. team. 44

Another team that was in the Super Bowl not too long ago but has gone in the wrong direction since then is the Atlanta Falcons. With Kyle Shanahan as their offensive coordinator, they were nearly unstoppable on offense. Devonta Freeman and Tevin Coleman were a force out of the backfield and Matt Ryan won the MVP in 2016 while throwing to Julio Jones, Mohamed Sanu, and Taylor Gabriel.

Since Shanahan left to take the head coaching job in San Francisco, the offense regressed. Matt Ryan looks a lot like the Matt Ryan we saw before Shanahan, which isn’t good. Sanu and Gabriel are gone as are both the running backs.

They’re hopeful that they found some help in the form of Todd Gurley, the former Georgia star who developed into one of the best backs in the NFL with the Rams. It’s a risk though as Gurley has declined due to some lingering knee issues. Should he be able to play 16 games, it could work out, but there’s a big “if” at this point.

Atlanta is also hoping for their defense to improve. Head coach Dan Quinn had this side of the ball playing well in 2016 but since then, it’s been an issue. Right now, there are more questions than answers and they don’t seem ready to compete in the NFC South.
