NFL Power Rankings: Chiefs, Ravens remain hot as facilities begin to reopen
By Randy Gurzi
A lot of drama surrounded the Green Bay Packers during the offseason ahead of 2019. New head coach Matt LaFleur had a tough task ahead of him as he needed to convince veteran quarterback Aaron Rodgers that he knew what he was doing — and that he could be in command.
And Rodgers didn’t make it easy. The sure-fire Hall of Fame quarterback called LaFleur out more than once before the season began. One issue was Rodgers’ ability to call audibles and the other was LaFleur having the team practice kickoffs. The coach took a back seat and even said Rodgers was right when asked about the issues raised by No. 12.
Everything seemed fine and they even won 13 games. Then, things got really interesting.
During the 2020 NFL Draft, the Packers moved up in the first round and took Utah State quarterback Jordan Love, clearly indicating Rodgers’ days were numbered. They also added A.J. Dillon in the second, which was telling for Aaron Jones, the running back who had a career-year.
It seems apparent LaFleur wants to build his team long-term. He has his quarterback of the future and is setting himself up in case Jones demands a lot of money when his rookie deal is done. He’s done this without hurting their chances this year, which is pretty impressive. He just has to hope Rodgers doesn’t bring even more drama because of it.
