23. David Montgomery, Chicago Bears

After parting ways with Jordan Howard, the Bears drafted Montgomery in the third round of the 2019 NFL Draft. As a rookie, Montgomery produced passable totals, but concerns about his efficiency and ceiling remain. While he’s only 23rd in this article, Montgomery could jump into the top 15 running backs with a productive second season.

The Iowa State product turned in two impressive seasons with the Cyclones. He amassed 2,362 rushing yards and 24 rushing touchdowns during that time. In each of those years, Montgomery finished in the top three among Big 12 running backs in both categories. He also finished in the top five for yards from scrimmage.

In his rookie season, Montgomery posted 100-yard performances in Week 7 and Week 17. Some analysts, like NFL.com’s Jeffri Chadiha, believe the young running back can take the next step in Year 2. In an article identifying Year 2 breakout candidates, Chadiha praised Montgomery.

"He [Montgomery] had a solid rookie season (889 rushing yards and seven total touchdowns), but he’s capable of so much more with a better offense. The Bears ranked 29th in the NFL in total offense last year, largely because embattled quarterback Mitch Trubisky struggled so mightily. That all could change if Nick Foles wins the job or simply pushes Trubisky to play at a higher level."

Most of what Montgomery can accomplish in 2020 comes down to the pieces around him. If Mitchell Trubisky continues struggling, that places more pressure on the running game. If the offensive line can’t pull together, Montgomery’s work becomes exponentially harder. With so many questions surrounding the Bears this coming year, it’s hard to tell how Montgomery’s second season will go.
