NFL Power Rankings 2020: Ranking every starting running back
By Samuel Teets
25. Adrian Peterson, Washington Redskins
The Redskins and new head coach Ron Rivera probably want Derrius Guice or Bryce Love starting at running back this season, but Peterson should have the opportunity to defend his job. As a former second-round pick, Guice might have an inside track on the spot, but his failure to stay healthy through two seasons could give Peterson the advantage.
After the Redskins fired Jay Gruden last year and named Bill Callahan interim head coach, Peterson saw his role on the offense increase. During Gruden’s five games as head coach, Peterson made four appearances and averaged 27 yards on ten attempts per game. He produced a measly 2.7 yards per attempt.
Under Callahan, Peterson’s production skyrocketed. In 11 games, the former NFL MVP averaged 71.8 yards and 15.5 attempts per appearance. He also gained 4.6 yards per attempt. Overall, Peterson finished the season with 898 rushing yards and five rushing touchdowns on 4.3 yards per attempt.
Until Guice or Love prove they can stay healthy for at least half a season, Washington should continue relying on Peterson. Riding a 35-year-old workhorse might seem silly in the modern NFL, but the Redskins experienced far more success while relying on Peterson last year than when the team rolled with Guice and the passing game.
