Fantasy Football Stock Watch: Risers and fallers in the NFC East
By Drew DeLuca
Washington Redskins
Last, and definitely least, are the Washington Redskins. The team replaced the departing Chris Thompson with 2020 third-rounder Antonio Gibson, a pass-catching specialist out of Memphis who threatens to cut into the workload of Derrius Guice.
Guice finally appears to be fully healthy, as evidenced by some impressive footwork and this footage of him lifting 585 pounds as if it was a sack of rice on his shoulders. However, the addition of Gibson as the second player taken by the Redskins in the 2020 NFL Draft limits the otherwise tremendous fantasy football upside of the former LSU standout.
The backfield situation was further muddied by the additions of veterans Peyton Barber and J.D. McKissic, free agents signed to provide depth behind Guice and the seemingly ageless Adrian Peterson. Oh, and let’s not forget Bryce Love, who also appears to be returning (and healthy).
This has all of the makings of an RBBC, and a situation to generally avoid. For those feeling lucky, smart money says Guice will emerge as the lead back, with Gibson reprising Thompson’s third-down/pass-catching role, albeit in a new offensive system.
In 2-QB, Superflex and larger dynasty leagues, Dwayne Haskins still bears watching as a late-round value; he should be ignored in all other formats. The new sheriff in town, Ron Rivera, brought one of his deputies with him from Carolina in the form of second-year signal-caller Kyle Allen, who waits in the wings for his chance in case Haskins falters.
There are no veteran tight ends worth getting excited about on the roster, and outside of sensational sophomore Terry McLaurin, the wide receiving corps is likewise uninspiring. Some in fantasy football circles had their eye on Kelvin Harmon prior to Draft Day, but the Round 4 addition of Antonio Gandy-Golden put a damper on that enthusiasm, a mood seems to be quite applicable for the 2020 Washington Redskins.
