3 Most overlooked Dallas Cowboys in 2020
By Randy Gurzi
1. Tyrone Crawford, Defensive End
Outside of Byron Jones, the Cowboys other big loss was defensive end Robert Quinn. After coming over in a trade with Miami before the season, Quinn was their leader in sacks with 11.5. He played so well that he was able to secure a five-year, $70 million deal with the Chicago Bears. Dallas, who is currently trying to re-sign Dak Prescott and just gave big contracts to DeMarcus Lawrence and Amari Cooper didn’t have the means to match that deal.
The expectation was that they would find a replacement in the draft and all eyes were on K’Lavon Chaisson from LSU. Chaisson would have been an ideal fit and he was even on the board for Dallas to take at No. 17, which is what the team and fans were all hoping for. What we weren’t expecting though, was for Oklahoma wideout CeeDee Lamb to be available.
With Lamb there, the front office was excited to improve the offense as they now have one of the deadliest trios at the position with Cooper, Lamb, and Michael Gallup. However, it does mean they skipped out on a pass rusher and they didn’t add anyone there until the fifth-round when they took Bradlee Anae from Utah.
Anae was another steal at that spot but it’s highly unlikely he will be the starter as a rookie. It’s also not likely that Aldon Smith, who was signed this year after four years away from the game, is will be the answer either.
But this doesn’t mean Dallas is in terrible shape at defensive end. That’s because they have a savvy veteran in Tyrone Crawford who is more than capable of playing opposite Lawrence. While Crawford isn’t explosive off the edge, he can play on early downs and allow players such as Anae, Smith and maybe even Randy Gregory to come in on third downs and get after the passer.
Crawford is a solid player and overlooking him would be a mistake.
