Chicago Bears: Khalil Mack, 5 takeaways from Chuck Pagano’s press conference
4. Pagano is excited to work with Gipson
The Bears’ signing of Gipson was an under the radar move that could end up paying big dividends. He has 112 starts over eight seasons with the Cleveland Browns, Jacksonville Jaguars, and the Houston Texans. He has 450 tackles and 23 interceptions (three of them returned for touchdowns).
Combining Gipson with Jackson gives the Bears’ safety position one of the best in the league. Over the past two seasons, only two safeties allowed a completion percentage of 55 percent or lower. One of them was Jackson and the other one was Gipson. Pagano is excited to work with Gipson.
"He’s a talented guy, he’s a smart guy, he’s a great pro. He’s played a lot and he’s got a ton of experience. He’s an athletic guy, he can play in deep parts of the field and he’s got good coverage skills and he can play down in the box, so from a versatility standpoint it’s going to be great to have him."
Pagano also mentioned that Gipson would compete for the starting job. Deon Bush and DeAndre Houston-Carson and others are in the competition as well. It’s good to hear that the team has competition but I don’t see this one being a real one. Gipson will come out on top fairly quickly and will move on to combining his skillset to Jackson’s.
