Atlanta Falcons – Brett Favre

Atlanta Falcons fans surely don’t want to remember this one because it has to be painful. There are times when a pro franchise just doesn’t see what they have and they let that star player go, only to see him become a star elsewhere. The Charlotte Hornets drafting Kobe Bryant comes to mind (and yes there were other factors involved but how do you let him go).

Another instance came in the NFL when the Falcons decided to give up on Brett Favre after just one season. Taken at No. 33 overall out of Southern Miss, Favre was never a favorite of former Atlanta head coach Jerry Glanville. He was also incredibly open about his dislike for the gunslinger’s style and Favre ended up attempting just four passes in his Atlanta career — he had no completions and two picks.

The Falcons then traded Favre to Green Bay for the No. 19 pick in the 1992 NFL Draft, which they used to get running back Tony Smith — who happened to be Favre’s old teammate at Southern Miss. Smith played for just three seasons in Atlanta and has 329 yards rushing, all of which came in his rookie campaign.

As for Favre, he was the starting quarterback for the next 16 seasons in Green Bay and threw 442 career touchdowns and leading them to a mark of 160-93 in his career. Favre also won a Super Bowl with the Packers and is mentioned as one of the best to ever play the game. Glanville surely made an error on this one.
