Cleveland Browns – Len Dawson

The Cleveland Browns have never won a Super Bowl, but they have had their share of Super Bowl-winning quarterbacks come to town. One of those is Mark Rypien, who joined them in 1994, just two seasons after winning the title with the Washington Football Team.

Rypien started just three games and was 2-1 for Cleveland, which also happened to be his final two winning games as a starter. He was a journeyman after that and played for the St. Louis Rams, Philadelphia Eagles, and Indianapolis Colts after leaving Cleveland.

While he’s a candidate to be the most forgotten star player the Browns once had, there was another name that they had who is an even bigger star — Len Dawson. The MVP of Super Bowl IV, Dawson was a three-time AFL Champion and one-time AFL MVP. He also led the league in passing yardage four times for the Kansas City Chiefs.

None of that would have been the case had the Browns hung onto Dawson, who was there from 1960 through 1961. Originally drafted by the Pittsburgh Steelers, Dawson was traded to Cleveland when Pittsburgh added Bobby Layne but he couldn’t beat out Milt Plum.

Dawson threw for just 108 yards in his Cleveland career, making him one of their least memorable star players.
