2018 NFL Redraft: Lamar Jackson saves the Cleveland Browns
By Samuel Teets
3. New York Jets: Baker Mayfield, QB (Sam Darnold, QB)
Regardless of Mayfield’s flaws, the Jets need to take a quarterback at this spot. While Darnold showed flashes in his first two seasons, Mayfield broke records as a rookie. In his first season, Mayfield set the rookie passing touchdown record with 27, shattering the previous mark of 26 held by Peyton Manning and Russell Wilson.
Mayfield didn’t bring the momentum from his rookie season into his second year, but we got a glimpse of his true potential. Hopefully, he experienced a sophomore slump and bounces back in his third season. Mayfield threw 22 touchdowns and 21 interceptions last year while Darnold threw 19 touchdowns and 13 interceptions.
The Jets could select several All-Pros at this spot. There are so many talented prospects still on the board, but the franchise needed a quarterback. New York’s offense featured journeyman quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick in 2015 and 2016. Josh McCown split time with Bryce Petty, who isn’t even in the league anymore, in 2017.
The Jets could not endure another season with McCown at the helm on the chance that they might land a stud quarterback in the 2019 NFL Draft. So, the team passes over a plethora of talent to take a chance on Mayfield. Although, looking at the supporting cast in New York, I don’t know if any young quarterback can truly succeed with the Jets.
