Jadeveon Clowney has Dallas Cowboys on his two-team wish list

This offseason, the Dallas Cowboys did a few things it started to seem they would never do. One was to move on from head coach Jason Garrett who was hand-picked by Jerry Jones to be his next Tom Landry.

Following that move, the Cowboys also added not only one defensive tackle in free agency, but two. After years of neglecting the position, they signed both Gerald McCoy and Dontari Poe.

Their third shocking move was signing safety Ha Ha Clinton-Dix. A talented player from Alabama, Clinton-Dix is the biggest name they have had at the position since Ken Hamlin and should help shore up their secondary.

Now, they could be on the verge of another surprising move — signing Jadeveon Clowney. Throughout the offseason, Dallas has been tied to the former No. 1 overall pick but Clowney has been holding out for the right contract.

Now, it appears he’s close to taking what he can get — with no teams matching his $20 million per year demands — and the Cowboys are one of two teams he is reportedly deciding between as it’s said Dallas and the New Orleans Saints are his preferred destinations.

If this sounds familiar, it’s because it is. Last season, Dallas and New Orleans were the two teams bidding for the services of Robert Quinn, the edge rusher who was being traded by the Miami Dolphins.

Dallas won that battle and Quinn did so well that he earned a five-year $70 million contract with the Chicago Bears.

Now looking to replace Quinn, the Cowboys would be thrilled to add Clowney who would play opposite DeMarcus Lawrence. However, the questions about his salary linger.

Clowney wants to break the bank but the Cowboys know they can’t afford to lock him up long-term. Instead, they would like to give him the same opportunity Quinn had in 2019, which is to play opposite Lawrence and earn a huge contract in free agency the following season.

In the end, this is probably the best move for Clowney but it remains to be seen if he’s seriously choosing between these teams or trying to force another team’s hand as he continues to pursue a deal with more long-term security.
