Las Vegas Raiders: 5 Cut candidates sitting on roster bubble
2. Kyle Wilber, LB
Signing both Cory Littleton and Nick Kwiatkoski this offseason gives the Raiders a massively needed upgrade at the linebacker position. They’ve been playing a patchwork game at the position for quite some time and they finally did something to adequately address the need. But now they are left with somewhat of a surplus in the middle of their defense.
By my estimation, one of Kyle Wilber, Marquel Lee or Nicholas Morrow is going to get the axe — you can really pick your poison there. For me, though, I believe the Raiders would be more inclined to see more time from the younger players in that group, Lee and Morrow, than the 31-year-old Wilber. As they can save $750,000 by releasing the veteran, who has been solid for what it’s worth, Las Vegas can have a nice mix of good veterans and developmental talent.
1. Nathan Peterman, QB
This one sounds obvious but that may not necessarily be the case for the Raiders. Nathan Peterman, after lasting less than two years as a fifth-round pick in Buffalo, landed on the practice squad in Oakland. He then was primed to make the roster in 2019 but landed on IR. The silver and black then re-signed him as a restricted free agent in the 2020 offseason.
While that may paint the picture of a player who’s going to make the roster, it’s hard to figure out where he would fit. Derek Carr is the assumed starter while the Raiders also signed Marcus Mariota as a free agent this offseason. When you look at that and also consider that the organization can save over $2 million by cutting Peterman, it’d be shocking for the quarterback to make the final roster.
