Chicago Bears: 5 Reasons Mitch Trubisky wins the quarterback competition
1. Trubisky can do more than Foles
Just going by what’s on paper, Trubisky should be the quarterback. He’s younger than Foles, and he’s more athletic. He can beat a defense with his legs. If things break down, he’ll tuck the ball and gain yards. Foles can’t do that. His forte is getting the ball out of his hands quickly and making good decisions.
Trubisky also has a strong arm. Yes, his accuracy leaves one wanting. He can get the ball downfield and deep, but he has to work on his accuracy. Quite a few touchdowns were left on the table when he missed open receivers.
Trubisky needs to work on his footwork. The footwork leads to bad hip motion which leads to inaccuracy. If Trubisky does a good job of fixing that (and working with a great quarterback guru should do that), and if he improves his decision making, he’ll be a very good quarterback.
Sometimes it takes some time to put everything together. Look at how Ryan Tannehill improved from his struggles with the Miami Dolphins. He went to Tennessee and got the Titans into the playoffs, upsetting both the New England Patriots (ending Tom Brady’s reign in the AFC) and the top team in the NFL, the Baltimore Ravens. He had a good lead against the eventual Super Bowl champion Chiefs before the Chiefs came back and beat them.
Tannehill ended the 2019 season with the league’s best passer rating (117.5) and he threw 22 touchdowns against just six interceptions.
Chicago hopes the same happens to Trubisky, except without having to do it with another team. He has the tools to be a good quarterback, he just needs to finally put it together. If he does, he’ll be the starting quarterback for the Chicago Bears for the foreseeable future.
