Chicago Bears: 5 Reasons Nick Foles wins the quarterback competition
2. Foles is a better game manager than Trubisky
The Chicago Bears don’t need an offensive juggernaut to win a lot of games. They have an elite defense that’s been one of the most dominant in the NFL the last two seasons. In fact, the 2018 defense ranks as the second-best unit of the 2010s.
On top of that, they made moves to improve the defense even more. If the players stay relatively healthy and play to their standards, the 2020 defense could eclipse that 2018 unit.
Because of that, the Bears need a quarterback who could manage a game. They need a quarterback who avoids mistakes and makes enough plays to help the team win games.
In 2019, the Bears lost five games by eight points or less. A pass completed here or there and the team wins some of those games. If that happened, the Bears likely make the playoffs for the second straight season.
This is what Foles shows he could do. He does a great job of protecting the ball. No, he doesn’t run the way Trubisky can, but he gets rid of the ball quickly so he doesn’t have to run. He will, however, step out of the pocket to extend the play when he has to, then find the open man.
Foles also does a good job of making key plays to extend drives. That is one of the areas of concern with the offense last season. There were too many three-and-outs that left the defense out on the field for too much time. That ultimately led to a tired defense late in games. A tired defense has difficulty making stops.
Foles can manage a game and help increase the Chicago Bears’ win total in the process.
