Chicago Bears: 5 Reasons Nick Foles wins the quarterback competition
1. Foles is mentally stronger than Trubisky
This is the biggest advantage Foles has over Trubisky. There are times when Trubisky looks like he’s a deer caught in the headlight. He holds onto the ball too long, failing to find the right receiver.
When he’s under pressure, Trubisky just wants to get the ball out of his hand. When he does that, his mechanics break down. His hips aren’t in the proper place and that hurts his accuracy. There have been way too many times when he throws behind a receiver or throws a pass so bad the receiver has to hit the ground to try to catch it.
Trubisky’s bad mechanics also hurt him on deep throws. Touchdown Wire ranked him dead last on the deep ball last season. He completed just 32 of his 103 deep pass attempts (31 percent) with four touchdowns and seven interceptions. If those numbers don’t change he doesn’t have a chance of winning this battle.
Foles, however, has a strong mental game. He has good mechanics whenever he throws (which is why he stays away from committing too many turnovers). He’ll stay in the pocket under pressure until he makes the throw. There aren’t too many scenarios that will make him nervous.
During his career, when Foles has 2.5 seconds or less to throw he has a completion percentage of 81 percent and has no interceptions. Trubisky is at 70 percent with two interceptions.
Against the blitz, Foles completes 75 percent of his attempts and again, zero interceptions. Trubisky completes at a 55 percent clip and has five interceptions.
This is where the battle will be won. If Foles continues to play well under pressure and Trubisky falters again then the Chicago Bears will go with Foles. He has the coaching staff that has confidence in him as well. This is an open competition but Foles has his advantages and looks to use them.
