1. Jourdan Lewis, CB

One name that continues to be forgotten about in the Dallas Cowboys secondary is Jourdan Lewis. We all know Chidobe Awuzie, who will be the top corner now that Byron Jones is gone. There’s also rookie Trevon Diggs and slot cornerback Anthony Brown — who can be equal parts impressive and frustrating depending on who you ask.

Then, there’s Lewis, the former third-round pick from Michigan. Personally, I believe Lewis has been the second-best cornerback on the team since his arrival but former defensive coordinator Rod Marinelli and defensive backs coach Kris Richard kept him on the bench in favor of players who better fit their desired measurements.

Clearly, this frustrated Lewis — although he never showed it. Instead, Lewis just kept doing his job and made plays when called upon. Having said that, he did let loose just a little when speaking with members of the Cowboys team website.

"“It doesn’t matter how big, tall, how long you’ve been here, it doesn’t matter. If you can play ball they want to see you in that position to go and compete for that job. I appreciate them for saying that. It’s definitely a different mindset as far as just giving everybody a fair shot. Giving everybody a opportunity to go out there and play, regardless of circumstances that, previously I had to go through.” — Lewis via R.J. Ochoa, Blogging the Boys"

The idea of a clean slate is fantastic and if Lewis was given that, he would clearly be one of the starters for this team. Sadly, that still might not be the case.

While this new regime seems more open than the previous one, they too seem to have a ‘type’. Their newest rookies are both much bigger with Trevon Diggs coming in at 6-foot-1 and 205-pounds and Reggie Robinson at the same measurements. They also signed Daryl Worley who is 6-foot-1 and 215-pounds as well as Maurice Canady (6-foot-1, 193-pounds).

As for Chidobe Awuzie, he is 6-foot and just over 200-pounds meaning the only cornerbacks on the team under 6-foot are slot corner Anthony Brown (5-11, 196 pounds) and Lewis (5-10, 195 pounds). And with Brown locking down the slot, that means Lewis is fighting for an outside spot and that could be a much more difficult spot for him to convince the coaches to roll with him.

If so, look for the Cowboys to try and get something in return for Lewis. They shouldn’t move on from him, but it sadly wouldn’t be a surprise.
