Minnesota Vikings: 3 Glaring weaknesses heading into training camp
1. Cornerback
An area that will be very interesting to watch closely throughout the course of the 2020 season in Minnesota comes at the back end of the defense and more specifically at the cornerback position.
Going into the offseason following the conclusion of the 2019 year, many figured the Vikings would see a large amount of shakeup among a defensive group that has been viewed as one of the top units in the NFL in past seasons.
As the free agency period began and the offseason rolled along, that was indeed the case and Minnesota did see some big names especially at cornerback that took their talents elsewhere for the 2020 season and perhaps beyond.
Some of those departures included cornerbacks such as Pro Bowler Xavier Rhodes, Mackensie Alexander, Trae Waynes and others, leaving a glaring weakness at the defensive back spot for the Vikings going into the new year.
In the NFL Draft, however, Minnesota did try to address that question mark and need with a pair of solid young draftees, taking TCU cornerback Jeff Gladney in the first round of the draft and picking Mississippi State cornerback Cameron Dantzler later on in the three-day draft.
At this point in the offseason, the Vikings consist of a cornerback unit filled with players such as Mike Hughes — who will emerge as the No. 1 player at that position — Holton Hill, Gladney, Dantzler and Kris Boyd, among others.
That group will have to step in and fill into some big holes left behind at the back end of the defense, but Minnesota could also look to add some more veteran players to ease that transition throughout the course of the 2020 campaign.
There are a few different question marks remaining on the defensive side of the ball for the Vikings, but their biggest weakness going into the upcoming year might lie within the cornerback position.
