Atlanta Falcons: 3 Glaring weaknesses entering 2020 training camp
Atlanta Falcons Glaring Weakness No. 1: Linebacker
Arguably the biggest weakness that is left remaining on the Atlanta roster leading into the start of the new year once again lies on defense and specifically the linebacker position.
Earlier on this offseason, the Falcons lost some key players within the middle of the defense, including losing De’Vondre Campbell via free agency when he signed with the Arizona Cardinals.
That departure and the lack of adding talent at linebacker has resulted in this spot continuing to be a glaring weakness for Atlanta as the 2020 campaign approaches.
Right now, the Falcons roster contains linebackers such as Deion Jones, Foyesade Oluokun, Deone Bucannon, LaRoy Reynolds, Edmond Robinson and others. Outside of Jones, who will step in as the primary threat at linebacker this year, there aren’t a ton of reliable players to consistently produce and fill some holes in the middle of the Atlanta defensive unit.
As the Falcons continue to move into offseason workouts and ultimately training camp followed by preseason play, they could come up with the decision to examine the free agent market to continue to add talent and perhaps more depth at linebacker in 2020. There are some options available that could be a nice veteran presence to fill in for at least this season.
There is a lot of upside when looking at the linebackers current present on the Falcons depth chart, but they still have yet to really prove themselves in the NFL although they will likely have the opportunity to do just that this year.
And for a defense that struggled to some extent in 2019, Atlanta needs multiple players on defense to step up and perform well throughout the upcoming season to try and ultimately make a return to the postseason for the first time since 2017.
