2020 NFL Quarterback Power Rankings: Cam Newton signing shakes things up
By Randy Gurzi
From the 2019 NFL MVP to the 2018 NFL MVP, Patrick Mahomes is still just a notch above Lamar Jackson in these 2020 NFL Quarterback Power Rankings as he comes in at No. 1 overall. Like Jackson, Mahomes was not the first quarterback taken in his draft, but he only had one taken ahead of him.
The 2017 NFL Draft featured Mitchell Trubisky as the first quarterback, who went second overall to the Chicago Bears. Mahomes was next as the Kansas City Chiefs jumped up to the No. 10 overall pick to take the Texas Tech product. At the time, it was a little surprising to see Mahomes go before Deshaun Watson, who was the Texans’ pick at 12, but that simply looks brilliant now.
Mahomes sat behind Alex Smith as a rookie and then took the reins in 2018 when Smith was traded to Washington. Mahomes won the MVP that season after throwing for 5,097 yards with 50 touchdowns and 12 picks. He likely would have won the Super Bowl as well, but the defense couldn’t get Tom Brady and the New England Patriots off the field in overtime.
Mahomes followed that season up with a 4,031-yard campaign that featured a 26-to-5 touchdown-to-interception ratio. He had to deal with a knee injury that slowed him down and cost him two games but the team remained strong and ended up winning the Super Bowl.
In his postseason run, Mahomes was incredible and rides that high into the new season. He has everything you need in a quarterback and he’s already a league MVP and Super Bowl MVP at just 24-years od age.
When all is said and done, he could have his name mentioned among the best to ever play the position.
