2020 NFL Quarterback Power Rankings: Cam Newton signing shakes things up
By Randy Gurzi
At one point, Sam Darnold looked to be a lock for the No. 1 pick in the 2018 NFL Draft but he ended up being passed on for Baker Mayfield. The New York Jets were more than happy to land him at No. 3 and he has shown them enough to be convinced he can start for the next decade for them.
Darnold improved in every category this past season as his yardage, completion percentage, and touchdowns all went up while his turnovers went down. The team finished 7-9 but they were 7-6 with him starting.
Entering 2020, Darnold still doesn’t have enough weapons to really take their team to the next level but they’re slowly getting there. As the talent around him increases, so too will his personal stock.
Rumors had the Denver Broncos selecting Drew Lock as early as the top-10 in the 2019 NFL Draft but they ended up dropping down and took Iowa tight end Noah Fant. They then ended up with back-to-back picks in the second round which led to them taking Kansas State offensive lineman Dalton Risner, then finally Lock at No. 42 overall.
He ended up missing the start of his rookie season due to injury but finished out the year looking rather impressive. In five starts, Lock threw for 1,020 yards with seven touchdowns and only three interceptions. Most importantly, the team won four of those starts.
Now with even more weapons at his disposal in 2020, there’s hope that John Elway and the Broncos finally have their long-term answer under center.
