2020 NFL Quarterback Power Rankings: Cam Newton signing shakes things up
By Randy Gurzi
Ever since Jon Gruden took over the Oakland Raiders — who are now going to be the Las Vegas Raiders — the belief has been that Derek Carr could be on the way out. Gruden is notoriously hard on his signal-callers and Carr hasn’t seemed to take the next step in his development. So far though, the two have seemed to work together just fine.
Still, 2020 is a huge season for Carr. The Raiders added a lot to the offense as they drafted Henry Ruggs, Lyn Bowden, and Bryan Edwards. They also got Gruden’s obligatory old guy as they signed tight end Jason Witten who is sure-handed even if he can’t threaten the deep part of the field.
Las Vegas also added Marcus Mariota, who could end up pushing Carr to become better. Or out the door. There will surely be no middle ground.
As a rookie, Jared Goff seemed to be a bust. The Los Angeles Rams first overall pick was 0-7 as a starter and completed just 54.6 percent of his passes. He has improved greatly since then and is coming off his second season with at least 4,600 yards passing. However, he seems to be someone that benefits from the system around him more than most.
Goff leans heavily on Sean McVay’s playcalling and the Rams have been stacked offensively. This isn’t meant to knock him, but it’s a general feeling and hurts him in these 2020 NFL Power Rankings just a bit.
