5 Most disappointing Dallas Cowboys quarterbacks of all-time
By Randy Gurzi
3. Matt Cassel (2015)
Following a very successful 2014 campaign, Jason Garrett earned a five-year extension with the Dallas Cowboys as the head coach. It wasn’t very long into that new deal that he found himself being harshly criticized by not only the fan base, but even team owner Jerry Jones.
Garrett was clearly a benefactor of the talent Tony Romo and DeMarco Murray possessed as they had Dallas’ offense looking unstoppable in 2014. Then in 2015 with Murray gone and Romo hurt, the Cowboys couldn’t buy a win.
After originally trying to go with Brandon Weeden as Romo dealt with a broken collarbone, the Cowboys decided to trade for Matt Cassel. While no one was confusing him with an All-Pro addition, he was a guy who had been to the playoffs in the past and twice led a franchise to 10-wins — once in 2008 with the New England Patriots and again in 2010 with the Kansas City Chiefs.
With Dallas, all they hoped for was a guy who could help them tread water until Romo returned. That didn’t happen as Cassel managed to go 1-6 in his seven starts and was abysmal with a completion percentage of just 58.3 and a touchdown-to-interception ratio of 5-to-7.
The team’s inability to manufacture any offense whatsoever was a mark against Garrett as Jones called him out for not being able to coach up a win without Romo carrying him. Fans had to deal with this same problem for another few seasons as Garrett stayed until this past season but this was the year we all saw just how little the coaching staff was doing to help this team get wins.
