NFL: Predicting the next 5 massive QB contracts after Patrick Mahomes deal
Kyler Murray contract prediction: Five years, $185 million
With just one year of NFL service to this point, predicting Kyler Murray’s contract — he won’t be eligible until the conclusion of the 2021 NFL season — is tough right now. But with what we saw from the 2019 Offensive Rookie of the Year in his inaugural season with the Arizona Cardinals, it does feel safe to say he’s on track for a massive extension whenever he does become eligible.
Despite playing behind an awful offensive line and with some questionable weapons at times, Murray overcame that in Kliff Kingsbury’s offense. The Oklahoma product threw for 3,722 yards, 20 touchdowns and 12 interceptions while completing 64.4 percent of his throws and in addition to rushing for 544 yards and four touchdowns. However, it’s hard to predict Murray’s future contract without projecting what the offense could be moving forward.
Now that Murray and Kingsbury have a year in the NFL under their belts, that should innately indicate an upward tick in productivity. That’s even more so the case when you consider that the Cardinals have upgraded the offense this offseason, adding Josh Jones on the line and, of course, trading for DeAndre Hopkins to give Murray an elite pass-catching weapon.
Because I still believe the Cardinals as a team are a bit away from competing in the postseason, that’s going to knock the value of Murray’s deal down slightly. However, a five-year contract extension worth $37 million per season would surely get a deal done and cement the quarterback as the centerpiece and Arizona while rightfully planting him as one of the top young players at the position.
