2021 NFL Draft: Steelers turn the page at quarterback in first-round mock draft
By Randy Gurzi
The Miami Dolphins had three draft picks in the first round of the 2020 NFL Draft and walked away with a quarterback, offensive tackle, and defensive back. At No. 5 overall, they took Alabama’s Tua Tagovailo, followed by USC’s Austin Jackson at No. 18 and then Noah Igbinoghene out of Auburn at No. 30.
While all three of those players are expected to be key pieces in their latest rebuild, none are more important than the quarterback. Tua comes in with a lot of pressure on him as the Dolphins have been struggling for years to find their next star under center. He has all the tools to be the guy, but there are legitimate concerns about his durability considering he struggled at Alabama to stay healthy.
For that reason, the Dolphins need Austin Jackson to develop into a quality starter sooner, rather than later. They also need to see players such as Robert Hunt, the Louisiana-Lafayette guard they took in the second round, step up as well as they hope to keep Tua as clean as possible in the pocket.
That’s the thought process with this pick as well with Samuel Cosmi from Texas being the selection. He might not be an overly powerful offensive tackle but he is a guy who wins with great intelligence and can get it done in the second level as well in the run game.
The ceiling for Cosmi is high but he still has enough to start right away while developing into a potential Pro Bowl-caliber player.
