2021 NFL Draft: Steelers turn the page at quarterback in first-round mock draft
By Randy Gurzi
Another team that found their franchise quarterback in this past draft is the Los Angeles Chargers. They took Justin Herbert from Oregon with the No. 6 overall pick, but he might not be starting right away for them. While the team would be fortunate to transition straight from Philip Rivers to Herbert, they don’t have any intentions of rushing him onto the field.
Instead, they seem content with allowing Tyrod Taylor to enter 2020 as the starter, although it wouldn’t be too shocking to see Herbert eventually unseat him during his rookie campaign.
Herbert was once considered a possible first overall pick in the 2019 class but fell behind Joe Burrow and Tua Tagovailo in the 2020 class after he returned to Oregon for his senior season. For him, it was worth it as he spent time on that roster with his brother and he also finds himself on a team that doesn’t have a terrible offensive roster — although they can use some help on the offensive line.
In an effort to find that help, they go to Alabama for Alex Leatherwood, a 6-6, 310-pound left tackle who would have likely been a top-15 pick had he entered the draft this year. Like Herbert, he decided to return for his senior season which gives him a little more time to prove himself worthy of being selected in the top-10.
