Predicting Dallas Cowboys 2020 depth chart: Defensive Line

Dallas Cowboys defensive end reserves
Aldon Smith
If anyone can challenge Tyrone Crawford for the starting job in 2020, it’s going to be Aldon Smith. Back in 2011 and 2012, Smith was one of the best edge rushers in the game and had 33.5 sacks for the San Francisco 49ers. However, off-field issues hampered him and he hasn’t played in the NFL since 2015.
Dallas is taking a huge risk on Smith but he comes in with the blessing of new defensive line coach Jim Tomsula, who was with him during his magical run in San Francisco. Smith has also reportedly been clean and working out hard with Jay Glazer, who is very proud of the work he has done.
For now, Smith looks to be a rotational edge rusher who can sub in on third-downs while Crawford shifts inside. That could be an ideal role for him as he looks to make good on the chance Dallas is taking on him.
Dorance Armstrong
Another player who could try and get his name in the mix is Dorance Armstrong. A fourth-round pick in 2018 out of Kansas, Armstrong has played in 30 career games and has 28 tackles and 2.5 sacks. He hasn’t really made a name for himself just yet but he has shown flashes of being as player for Dallas.
Right now, Armstrong has the edge over the other young players looking for snaps this season. And he has the tools to make the most out of those opportunities.
