How the Jacksonville Jaguars can win the AFC South in 2020
2. Finding other big-play options than WR D.J. Chark and RB Leonard Fournette.
It’s safe to say that the Jacksonville offense isn’t exactly loaded with talent at the skill positions. But the team does have wide receiver in D.J. Chark, who did wind up in the Pro Bowl this past season after catching 73 passes for 1,008 yards and eight scores in his second NFL season.
Meanwhile, 2017 first-round running back Leonard Fournette remains somewhat of a mystery because the talent is there. But injuries have curtailed his development to date. Still, he comes off a season in which he played and started a career-best 15 games and finished with an impressive 1,674 yards from scrimmage. He was the club’s leading rusher with 1,152 yards and also caught a team-best 76 passes. But he reached the end zone only three times.
All told, Doug Marrone’s offensive unit totaled only 27 touchdowns in 2019. The Jaguars scored just 300 points, 160 of those in their six wins. A lot more is needed from wideouts Chris Conley, Dede Westbrook, Keelan Cole and perhaps 2020 second-round pick Laviska Shenault Jr. (Colorado).
General manager David Caldwell did sign tight end Tyler Eifert, who’s extremely familiar with new offensive coordinator Jay Gruden’s system (via John Shipley of SI.com). Regardless of who has played quarterback in recent years, it’s an attack that has lacked a lot of firepower.
