The Dak Prescott and Dallas Cowboys drama is far from over.

The Dallas Cowboys tried to pinch pennies with their star quarterback over the past two seasons and it’s cost them in more ways than one. Not only has their inability to lock Dak Prescott up to a long-term deal hurt them on the salary cap this season, but it will continue to do so if they do get something worked out in 2021.

However, their ability to get anything worked out could also be hampered by their botched negotiations. The Cowboys front office was so tone-deaf and unaware in their approach with Prescott that they failed to realize they insulted one of their biggest stars. And that could lead to the two sides parting ways in the near future.

This idea has been floated by many outlets but will only be exaggerated now that someone in the organization is admitting that Prescott no longer wants to play for America’s Team.

Cowboys insider and former team scout Bryan Broaddus Was recently on 105.3 The Fan and spoke to Prescott’s happiness — or lack thereof — with the team. Citing an unnamed coach, Broaddus says that No. 4 isn’t happy playing with the team any longer, which is understandable after the way they refused to budge at all in their contract demands.

For anyone unaware of the contract dispute, Dallas elected to let Prescott play out the final year of his rookie deal in 2019. Instead of paying him, they gave Ezekiel Elliott a new contract, despite him having two years left on his deal.

At the time, Prescott was expected to make around $30 million per season. Then other quarterbacks struck it rich with Carson Wentz, Jared Goff, and Ryan Tannehill all landing deals with huge money. This, of course, increased Prescott’s asking price this offseason.

Dallas apparently was fine with the price tag (roughly $33-$35 million) but it all came down to years. Dak wanted four years but the Cowboys said they don’t do that — and wouldn’t back off their five-year contract demand.

Where could Dak Prescott and the Dallas Cowboys end up?

In the end, this led to Prescott signing a franchise tag that guaranteed him north of $31 million — all of which counts on the cap this year and prevents them from landing another free agent such as Everson Griffen or Jadeveon Clowney. As bad as that is, Prescott’s number in 2021 will also skyrocket since the franchise tag that year is estimated to be $37 million.

So not only has his asking price increased, but there’s no way he will want to sign a five-year deal now that he was forced to play on the tag already.

Prescott is set to be the third quarterback to ever play on the tag. First, it was Drew Brees in 2005 with San Diego and then in 2016 and 2017, Kirk Cousins was twice tagged by Washington. Each ended up playing for another franchise following their final tagged campaign.

Dallas didn’t learn from history and it could wind up costing them dearly. Sure, Dak will play his heart out even if he’s unhappy on the tag, but that doesn’t mean he will stick around forever.

And if he does leave, they have no one to blame but themselves.
