Early 2021 NFL free agency rankings: George Kittle headlines top 70 players
By Samuel Teets
68. Cam Newton, QB, New England Patriots
When I initially assembled a list of names for this article, I didn’t even consider Newton. Coming off a year where he missed 14 games, the former MVP signed a one-year deal with the Patriots. Surpassingly, Newton didn’t attract more attention in free agency, which pushed him into signing a cheap contract with New England.
Before starting 0-2 and then sitting out the final 14 weeks of the 2019 season, Newton put together arguably the second-best year of his career in 2018. He completed over 65% of his pass attempts for the first time and carried the Carolina Panthers to a 6-2 record in the team’s first eight games. If Newton returns to that form this season, he should get another starting job in 2021.
Of course, there’s always the chance Newton flops in New England. He’s the definition of a hit-or-miss player, but I still believe he can be a productive NFL quarterback.
67. Larry Fitzgerald, WR, Arizona Cardinals
While his current contract ends after the upcoming season, Fitzgerald might not hit free agency. The soon-to-be 37-year-old is a prime retirement candidate. Even if he decides to play another season, the Cardinals won’t tolerate seeing Fitzgerald in a uniform other than their own.
This offseason, Fitzgerald signed his fourth one-year extension since the start of 2016. His current deal is for $11.5 million, which is slightly more than what he received in previous years. Fitzgerald produced 75 receptions for 804 yards and four touchdowns last season. With DeAndre Hopkins joining the team and Christian Kirk improving, Fitzgerald’s totals should decrease this year.
Originally the third overall pick in 2004, Fitzgerald has given Arizona everything he possibly could. Fans should enjoy watching him play this year. They might never get another chance.
