Dallas Cowboys tight ends: The Reserves

The Cowboys elected not to sign — or draft — anyone that could challenge Blake Jarwin for the starting job. In fact, they didn’t do much at all outside of one signing for a reserve tight end.

Blake Bell

After winning a Super Bowl with the Kansas City Chiefs, Blake Bell hit free agency and ended up signing with the Dallas Cowboys. A former quarterback at Oklahoma, Bell converted to tight end and was drafted by the San Francisco 49ers in the fourth round of the 2015 NFL Draft.

He spent two seasons there before spending one year in both Minnesota and Jacksonville before yet another one-year stint with the Chiefs in 2019. Bell enters his sixth season in the league with just 38 career receptions and no regular-season touchdowns — however, he did score once in the playoffs for Houston.

Bell is going to primarily serve as a blocking tight end in Dallas but he could be one snap away from being the No. 1 guy. Hopefully he will be up to the task.

Dalton Schultz

This is a huge season for Dalton Schultz as he has a real shot at getting some solid snaps this year. He started to come on strong as a rookie and had 12 receptions for 116 yards in 2018. However, he was hardly on the field in his second season once Jason Witten returned.

He appeared in all 16 games but had only one catch for six yards. He’s a solid blocker but flashed some as a receiver during 2018. He enters camp looking to be the third-string tight end but he could challenge Bell.
