Dallas Cowboys training camp: 3 Most important position battles
By Randy Gurzi
1. The cornerback battle
When the Cowboys decided to let Byron Jones walk in free agency, they understood they were going to have to do something about the cornerback position. They had faith in players such as Chidobe Awuzie, Jourdan Lewis and Anthony Brown, but they weren’t going to be enough.
Dallas did end up landing a quality corner in Trevon Diggs from Alabama, who was a steal in the second round. There’s also Daryl Worley, a free agent signing with a lot of experience in the NFL. Rounding the depth chart out is fourth-round rookie Reggie Robinson.
Right now, the real battle is going to be for the starting jobs. Awuzie and Brown are the favorites right now but Worley and Lewis shouldn’t be counted out. Then again, neither should Diggs who excelled at Alabama while covering some of the best receivers in the NCAA.
Dallas will be heavily criticized for allowing Jones to leave should it turn out that none of the aforementioned players is up to the task of being a no. 1 cornerback in the NFL. So far, none has proven to be of the same caliber of Jones but there’s also a new defensive coordinator in town in Mike Nolan who could help players such as Awuzie unlock the potential they entered the NFL with.
This position is wide open and in all honesty, it’s the most important battle of the offseason for the Cowboys.
