4. John Jenkins

After the loss of Williams, many people expected the Chicago Bears to pick someone up through the draft. The team decided against that and signed John Jenkins.

Jenkins has bounced around in his career. He was the New Orleans Saints’ third-round pick (82nd overall) in the 2013 NFL Draft. The Saints cut him in 2016 and the Seattle Seahawks quickly picked him up. The Buffalo Bills signed him as a free agent in 2017 but cut him right before the season. The Bears picked him up and he played for the Bears for the 2017 season. The New York Giants signed him in 2018 and the Miami Dolphins signed him in 2018.

Now Jenkins is back in Chicago. Last season, he played in all 16 games, starting five of them. He recorded 34 tackles and a sack. The only time he was a fulltime starter was with the Saints in 2015. He recorded 49 tackles, 0.5 sack, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery.

That was five years ago, however. Would he be able to start again at age 31 without playing more than 17 percent of the snaps in any season after 2015? He played 43 percent of the snaps with the Dolphins last season but that was at defensive end.

Jenkins should remain as a backup. He won’t be the answer in a starting role. The Bears need to keep him at the position they signed him for and have him take snaps as a reserve.
