Chicago Bears: 5 Players who could replace Eddie Goldman in 2020
3. Bilal Nichols
With the depth and flexibility the Bears have on the line, they could decide to move defensive end Bilal Nichols inside. Nichols was the Bears’ fifth-round pick in the 2018 NFL Draft. When the season began, the Bears had him backing up Akiem Hicks. He opened eyes in training camp and during the preseason. He continued his good play into the regular season whenever he got on the field.
Nichols did such a good job that the Bears made him a starter on the other defensive end spot. He had 28 tackles, three sacks, two forced fumbles and a fumble recovery. He spent the entire 2019 season as a starter.
Roy Robertson-Harris, a converted linebacker, did a pretty good job himself at defensive end. In 2018, before Nichols took over, he recorded 22 tackles, three sacks and two passes defended. He can step up and start at defensive end again and perform well. That allows Nichols to move inside.
As I mentioned about Jenkins, he played defensive end for the Dolphins last season. He can team with Abdullah Anderson and help out as a defensive end backup as well as a backup tackle. On certain packages, rookie Trevis Gipson can also step in and help. If Ledarius Mack has a good training camp, he could pitch in as well.
If the Bears feel confident in Nichols to be a one-year stopgap, he could be an attractive option.
