Green Bay Packers: 5 Free agents to sign before training camp
By Joe Kipp
1. Mike Daniels, DL
A familiar face to Packers fans, many were surprised when defensive lineman Mike Daniels was released by Green Bay last summer before the start of training camp. Daniels missed six games in 2018 due to a foot injury, which is likely the main reason the Packers cut ties. Daniels subsequently signed with the Lions after being cut by the Packers, but only appeared in nine games for Detroit last season. He’s now a free agent once again.
Daniels was a fan favorite in Green Bay during his time with the team, and for good reason. His big personality is popular among players and fans, which is a huge reason he’s been a regular on the NFL’s annual Top 100 Players countdown. Re-signing Daniels, who’s still just 31 years old, would provide another veteran presence in Green Bay’s locker room.
When he was healthy, Daniels was a force for the Packers. Prior to the 2018 season where he suffered injuries, he broke out the year prior, recording a career-high five sacks, 14 quarterback hits and 49 tackles, which helped him be selected to his only Pro Bowl.
Daniels was also a force at stopping the run during his time with Green Bay. The Packers struggled at stopping the run last season, as evidenced by their performance against the San Francisco 49ers in the NFC Championship game. Assuming he could pass a physical, Daniels would be a great addition for the Packers at this point.
